Suriname

The view from Hooiberg, Aruba
I flew to Suriname after saying goodbye to Pat in Medellín. I had a 10 hour layover in Aruba where I rented a car and drove around the island. In the center is a mountain called Hooiberg that I took this photo on.
Donkey
I guess one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island is the donkey sanctuary. The Spanish first brought donkeys to the island in the 1500s as work animals. The sanctuary was started in the 1990s to care for the feral donkeys that had been abandoned when cars became more common.
Cave painting in Arikok
This painting is found in a cave in Arikok National Park. It was likely made around 500 to 2,000 AD by the Caquetío people, who likely migrated to islands in the southern Caribbean from South America.

Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Mosque
The Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Mosque in Paramaribo, Suriname — the largest mosque in South America. It reflects Suriname's diversity, including its large large Javanese population, who were brought by the Dutch as indentured laborers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Korean War Memorial
The Korean War Memorial in Paramaribo. Suriname sent 115 soldiers to fight in the war as part of the Dutch battalion.
Peanut Soup
Peanut soup. It has West African roots and was brought to Suriname by enslaved Africans. Today, it remains a staple in Surinamese cuisine.
View atop Fredberg
Sunrise from Fredberg, a mountain several hours outside of Paramaribo. I wanted to do a few more hikes into the jungle, but it was hard to find an operator. It seemed that the tourism industry got hit hard during COVID and still hadn't recovered.
The river from Fort Zeelandia
The Suriname River from Fort Zeelandia. Built by the Dutch in the 1600s, the fort later became the headquarters of the 1980 coup, which occurred shortly after Suriname's independence. It was also the site of the 1982 December Murders, when critics of Desi Bouterse's regime were executed.
Pengel statue
Statue of Johan Adolf Pengel, prime minister in the 1960's. He's remembered for his leadership during the country's push for self-government.
