Independence Square
Independence Square in Montevideo, Uruguay. José Artigas is considered the founder of Uruguay; his crypt is below his statue in the center of the square. The gate of the old city is found at the far end of the square.
Who created tango?
La Cumparsita was written and first played in the La Giralda cafe and is considered the anthem of tango today. The origin of tango is disputed: Uruguay claims it was invented in Montevideo while Argentina claims it was invented up the Río de la Plata in Buenos Aires. Photo taken at the Museo del Tango, which is where the La Giralda once stood in Independence Square.
Uruguayan countryside
The rolling hills of Uruguay. Much of the country looks like this. Taken near the city of Colonia del Sacramento.
The Anglo power plant
The power plant of the Anglo Meatpacking Factory in Fray Bentos, Uruguay. The factory is actually a World Heritage Site. The first place in the country to produce electricity and centralize production, its products were consumed by Allied armies in both world wars, explorers in Antarctica, and astronauts in orbit. Arguably, it brought the country into the Industrial Age and the global market.
The Anglo slaughterhouse
Pictured is part of the slaughterhouse. The most popular products were meat extract and corned beef; however, the company claimed they processed everything but the cow's "moo". Beef is still a main export of Uruguay. Today, there are 4 cattle per capita, which is 12 million cows!
Carmelo Bridge
My friend wanted to show me this bridge in the city of Carmelo for its design
Carnaval festivities
Coincidentally, the town was having this Carnaval-style festival which seemed to attract all 20,000 residents. We learned that each year they celebrate the completion of the bridge, which marked its 111th anniversary that year.
